It’s graduation season and Invest in Others is proud to share that Chief Marketing Officer Emily Burns Perryman recently completed the Harvard Business School Club of Buffalo’s Nonprofit Management Program (NMP), an immersive leadership experience designed to help nonprofit professionals navigate complex management, governance, strategy, and operational challenges.
The program explored critical topics including financial reporting and control, mission and strategy, organizational change, fundraising and development, operations, governance, and the evolving nonprofit landscape. Through the HBS case discussion method, participants strengthened their ability to lead through ambiguity, evaluate competing priorities, and make informed strategic decisions.

One of the strongest takeaways from Emily’s experience was the tremendous value financial advisors bring to nonprofit organizations, not only as donors and advocates, but as board members, committee leaders, and volunteers.
Many of the core areas explored in the program align directly with the expertise advisors bring to the table, including:
• Financial stewardship and oversight
• Strategic planning and long-term sustainability
• Governance and accountability
• Risk management and operational efficiency
• Navigating organizational change
• Fundraising strategy and donor engagement
• Mission alignment and thoughtful decision-making
Financial advisors are uniquely positioned to help nonprofits think critically, plan responsibly, and build stronger futures for the communities they serve. Their professional expertise, combined with a commitment to service, can help organizations strengthen operations, improve governance, and remain mission-focused in an increasingly complex environment
In addition, Emily noted that programs like NMP reinforce how important cross-sector leadership and community engagement are to the long-term success of nonprofit organizations. We’re grateful for opportunities like this that continue to strengthen our leadership, collaboration, and impact throughout the nonprofit sector.

Throughout the program, we had the chance to visit some incredible local nonprofit organizations. While I already knew it, I feel good seeing that there’s so many dedicated, innovative, hardworking, and caring individuals in Western New York who are committed to doing the kind of work that strengthens people’s lives and communities.
To quote Justin Elder, ChSNC®, someone I met last year at the Invest in Others awards gala in 2025, and recipient of its Emerging Impact award, “thank you for shining a light on people doing quiet work in loud times.”
Strong leadership is essential in the nonprofit sector because organizations are constantly balancing mission, strategy, funding, operations, and community impact, often while navigating limited resources and rapidly changing environments. Effective leaders help organizations remain mission-focused, financially responsible, adaptable, and positioned for long-term success.
At Invest in Others, we are proud to spotlight financial advisors who dedicate their time, expertise, and leadership to nonprofits across the country because their contributions extend far beyond financial guidance. As board members, volunteers, mentors, and advocates, these individuals help strengthen organizations, expand opportunities, and create meaningful change that positively impacts people, families, and communities every day.
