Twelve years ago, John Thane volunteered as a meal delivery driver for Metroport Meals On Wheels (MMOW) just once a month. He saw firsthand how something so seemingly simple, a delivered meal, could make such a profound difference. Today, we’re proud to recognize John, of Ameriprise Financial in Southlake, TX, as a Community Service Award finalist for the 2026 Invest in Others Awards. In the years since that first delivery route, he has become even more involved with MMOW, serving on various committees and the board of Trustees since 2019, including a stint as president from 2022 to 2024.
MMOW’s mission is to support independence for the elderly through home-delivered meals, senior center luncheons, and other services, caring for seniors and medically fragile individuals regardless of age or financial circumstances, and working to relieve hunger and isolation while improving their quality of life.
“It’s about more than nutrition,” said John. “It’s about human connection, dignity, and letting people know they haven’t been forgotten.”
Thane’s proudest achievement with MMOW was helping lead the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring its “no missed meals” promise was kept. Despite rising costs, increased demand and operational strains, he kept MMOW focused on its mission and the seniors that depended on it.
“What sets John apart is not just the quantity of service, but the quality and heart behind it,” said Mary King, Executive Director of MMOW. “John has an incredible ability to unite people, inspire action, and create sustainable change.”
As a Community Service Award finalist, Metroport Meals On Wheels will receive a $25,000 grant from Invest in Others to help further their support of seniors in Texas. We look forward to celebrating John’s story at this year’s Invest in Others Awards Gala.
