The Personal Rewards of Volunteering: Inspiring the Next Generation of Financial Advisors

April 30, 2025

As Invest in Others closes out Volunteer Month, it’s time to look toward the future! We know that volunteering is a powerful tool for personal growth, offering individuals a chance to make a positive impact on their communities while also enriching their own lives. For those in the financial advising industry, volunteering can be especially rewarding, not just in terms of giving back, but also as an opportunity to develop new skills, expand networks, and inspire the next generation.

That’s why Invest in Others checked in with another of our volunteers, Eileen Norton, Owner/Manager, Accelerate LLC., who is part of our development committee, to hear more from her perspective.

“Volunteering is an opportunity to stay connected to my community and support missions and people I care about. I value the efforts by our industry stakeholders, especially financial advisors, who are making an impact near and far, and leading the way for the next generation,” said Eileen.

Something that can motivate the next generation is
a sense of purpose and one of the most fulfilling aspects of volunteerism is that sense of purpose it provides.

Whether helping individuals manage their finances, teaching financial literacy to underprivileged communities, or any other volunteer opportunities explored, the impact of time and expertise can be life-changing. Volunteering can utilize professional knowledge in a meaningful way that extends beyond the confines of a job, deepening a sense of fulfillment.

In addition to personal satisfaction, volunteering also offers a unique opportunity for professional growth. When you give time to causes you care about, you’re honing valuable skills such as communication, empathy, and leadership. These skills are not only important for client relationships but are also key in inspiring others, especially younger individuals considering financial advising as a career.

In addition, volunteering serves as a powerful example for those just starting to explore the financial field. By giving back, it demonstrates the positive role that financial advisors can play. This sets a standard for aspiring financial professionals and shows them that success in the industry isn’t just about personal gain, it’s also about making a difference.

Did you know that the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board’s 2022 pro bono report revealed that 14% of all CFP professionals engaged in pro bono work that year.

This contribution resulted in a total of 275,873 volunteer hours, averaging approximately 20 hours per participating advisor. Great work, but so much more can be done!

“Volunteering is personally rewarding. Seeing the immense appreciation from award recipients is so gratifying. Participating in Invest in Others will make you feel part of something truly special in our industry,” said Eileen.

Ultimately, volunteering in the financial advising space not only enriches the lives of those you help but also sets an example for the next generation of advisors. Your efforts help foster a community of professionals who are not only skilled but also motivated by a shared sense of social responsibility. In this way, volunteering becomes not just an act of service, but a powerful way to shape the future of the financial advising profession. Be the change!
