Celebrating Volunteer Month: A Look at How Giving Back Fuels Personal and Professional Growth

March 27, 2025

April is Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the selfless contributions of people who dedicate their time and energy to causes greater than themselves.

As we celebrate this month, we want to thank all our volunteers over the years.
Your work and engagement with Invest in Others encourages the philanthropic spirit and volunteerism within the financial advising community, and we could not do it without you. Volunteerism is impactful and beyond simply doing good, it plays a crucial role in personal growth, career development, and professional success.

As our team approached Volunteer Month and began reflecting on its meaning, we decided to ask several of our organization’s esteemed volunteers for their thoughts and perspectives.

In this post you’ll hear from
Kelly Coulter, Head of Marketing at Private Advisor Group, one of the nation’s leading financial services firms.

Kelly serves on the Invest in Others marketing committee and uses her skills and expertise to help fulfill our mission.

The Vital Role of Volunteerism in Personal and Professional Growth

Volunteering isn’t just about giving back to the community; it’s also a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. Whether you’re mentoring youth, working on environmental conservation projects, or supporting vulnerable communities, volunteerism can unlock life-changing benefits.

A study by The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) revealed that volunteers have a 27% higher chance of finding a job compared to non-volunteers. Why? Volunteering helps individuals develop skills that are in high demand, such as leadership, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills not only enhance your resume but also demonstrate to potential employers your commitment to collaboration and your ability to adapt to a variety of situations.

Volunteering is also a gateway to expanding your network. You’ll meet people with similar passions and values, opening doors to career opportunities, mentorship, and lasting professional relationships. In fact, the Independent Sector reported that 63 million Americans volunteer annually, forming a vast and diverse network of individuals who can help each other thrive both personally and professionally.

“Financial advisors often ask, ‘What’s the best way to market my business?’ While strong branding is essential, one of the most impactful ways to grow your presence is by investing in and volunteering with your community. Supporting a nonprofit isn’t just about giving back—it’s a powerful way to build relationships, increase visibility, and connect with potential clients or centers of influence in an authentic, meaningful way,” said Kelly.

Climbing the Career Ladder Through Volunteerism

When you volunteer, you often find yourself taking on new challenges and responsibilities that expand your capabilities in ways traditional work environments might not. Many volunteers find that the experience boosts their confidence and gives them an edge when advancing in their careers. According to LinkedIn, 41% of hiring managers consider volunteer experience to be equally as important as work experience.

“Volunteering is one of the most authentic ways to build your personal brand. It demonstrates what you care about, how you show up for others, and your willingness to contribute beyond your job description. Those experiences don’t just enhance your skill set—they create meaningful connections that often open doors you weren’t expecting,” said Kelly.

Additionally, for those looking to switch careers or explore new industries, volunteering offers a valuable opportunity to gain relevant experience in a low-pressure environment. Many nonprofit organizations are in need of skilled professionals and often look to their volunteers for leadership roles or specialized tasks. By volunteering, you not only make a tangible impact but also discover new passions that align with your professional goals.

The Powerful Connection Between Philanthropy and Career Development

The connection between philanthropy and career growth is becoming more evident as individuals increasingly seek to align their personal values with their professional lives. According to a survey by Cone Communications, 64% of millennials will not take a job from a company that does not have a strong social or environmental commitment.

Similarly, 72% of employees at companies with strong CSR programs report feeling proud to work for their employer, fostering a deeper connection between personal fulfillment and professional development.

Volunteering also has positive effects on mental health, well-being, and work-life balance, which are essential to sustained professional growth. Studies show that people who volunteer report greater life satisfaction and lower stress levels. These benefits spill over into the workplace, where employees with higher emotional intelligence, as a result of their volunteer experiences, are more likely to be seen as leaders.

Why Volunteer? The Benefits Are Endless

Volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s about growing—personally and professionally. By committing your time to a cause you care about, you enhance your skills, expand your network, and gain experiences that can propel you forward in your career. At the same time, you’re contributing to a better, more compassionate world. As we celebrate Volunteer Month, let’s all take a moment to think about how we can make a positive impact in our communities.

“Volunteering isn’t just about giving time—it’s about creating a ripple effect of positive impact. When you commit to a cause, you’re not only helping those in need, but you’re also inspiring others to do the same. That collective effort strengthens communities, builds deeper connections, and fosters a culture of giving.

For financial advisors, volunteering also reflects the values that clients look for—integrity, commitment, and a true dedication to making a difference. Beyond the personal fulfillment it brings, it naturally expands your network, introduces you to like-minded professionals, and reinforces trust with those who see your passion in action.

That’s why organizations like Invest in Others are so important—they amplify the spirit of giving across the financial profession and shine a light on how we’re making a meaningful impact in the communities we serve,” said Kelly.
